About me & this newsletter

I’m Charlotte Wood, author of seven novels and three books of non-fiction. My most recent book Stone Yard Devotional was shortlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize.

This newsletter began as an experiment, investigating how ‘subtracting’ some things - approaches, ambitions, tasks, engagements, methods - and replacing them with others (or nothing at all) might improve my creative work and thus my whole life.

From January to September 2024 I wrote a monthly essay on one aspect of the creative process, except for August, when I replaced the essay with a long Q&A on different writing problems submitted to me by readers.

I decided to make the September edition my last full-length essay, because I wanted to get back to writing my novel.

From Sept 2024 onwards the newsletter will be free for all subscribers and irregular - mainly it will be a noticeboard for news about my work, the work of others, teaching and workshops I will be running.
